Timeless Home Design Guide

“The Classics Never Go Out of Style.”

People toss that phrase around a lot, and that’s because it’s true. But what exactly makes something a classic when it comes to home design and construction? We know what separates the “modern” from the “contemporary,” but what is it that separates the trendy from the timeless? And why is it that certain homes, apartments, and condos remain just as elegant throughout the decades, while others become outdated and tacky?

These are all hard questions to answer, especially in a world where our minds are always focused on that next big thing…but we should never underestimate the power of timeless home design!

At Sleeping Dog Properties, Inc., we think there’s a lot of value in opting for more traditional construction and/or design decisions, and we’ve found that many other people agree. If you’re one of those people, check out these best practices for turning your home, apartment, or condo into a timeless sight to behold, both inside and out.

Starting From the Outside In: Exterior Home Design Styles

Choose Wisely: Your Materials Matter!

Specific styles have withstood the test of time for a reason, and it’s these styles that will ensure your living quarters remain as tasteful today as they will be tomorrow. And what better place to start than with your home’s exterior? After all, that’s the first thing that your visitors will see!

When thinking about exterior home design styles, there are certain materials, such as stone, cast stone, brick, and cedar shake siding, that have remained popular throughout the years, seemingly resistant to the burden of passing trends. In short, they’ve been proven to stand the test of time – both functionally and aesthetically – making them consistently popular choices that appeal to all types of homeowners and tastes.

Another perfect example is the classic Cape Cod type house, a timeless home design plan that owes much to the New England homes of the 17th century. To this day, Cape-style homes are famous for characteristics like simple exterior ornamentation, shingle siding, and numerous other time-resistant features.

Now, let’s take a look at an example of the exact opposite. Remember those box-style homes that were all the rage in the 60s? They certainly made an impact on the design trends of the time, but nowadays, these homes look like they’ve been pulled straight out of an old-timey sitcom. Sure, they might have been stylish at the time, but now all we can think about is how dated they look!

Combining the Right Materials with the Right Designs

Building a truly timeless home involves more than simply selecting the right architectural style or the longest-lasting materials. It’s also about how you combine those two things.

Take the classic Victorian home, for example – perhaps one of the most iconic examples of timeless home design imaginable. No matter how beautiful, Victorian architecture will need to be complemented with consistent design choices such as intricate woodwork. If you’re attempting to modernize a Victorian home, you need to be careful not to damage the building’s character by doing things like removing side porches, making unnecessary changes to the window sash, painting over previously untouched woodwork, and any number of other remodel mistakes.

This is just one example of why you should be very careful when you’re laying out or altering exterior home design styles. Of course, there’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to add some more trendy or modern touches, but you also need to consider what will best maximize your home’s “wow” factor in the long run – and to be extra leery of things that will damage an already timeless home’s character!

Enduring Style: Timeless Interior Design Tips

Timeless Kitchen Design Ideas

Countertops: When most people think of timeless kitchen countertops, it’s hard not to think of marble. Sophisticated and stylish, a marble countertop is sure to convey that perfectly elegant old-world feel you’re reaching for. However, a slightly whiter option with thick, dramatic veins could be a Calacatta, or a greyer option like an Italian Carrara countertop could offer up some nice soft and feathery veining. Of course, other time-resistant options include the very popular slate, granite, and quartz composites. As you can see, you have lots of options for a timeless kitchen countertop!

Lighting: If you’re looking to make a statement when your visitors walk into your main dining area, consider lantern pendants. These can be found in a variety of finishes and sizes, but you want to be careful not to choose the wrong size or placement (a kitchen remodeling expert can set you down the right path if you’re unsure). Height specifications can also vary greatly depending on what sort of space you’re working with, but again, consulting with a professional can help ensure your lighting serves a purpose that’s as functional as it is illuminating.

Cabinets: Kitchen cabinets are essential for storage, but don’t neglect them their chance to shine aesthetically! Streamlined looks such as shaker front cabinets or flat-fronted cabinets have certainly managed to maintain their glamor over the years, and we see little chance of that changing. Meanwhile, you can go with white or natural shades of paint as opposed to wood-stained cabinets, which pose the constant threat of dating your kitchen as wood-stain trends come and go.

Tiles & Flooring: While patterned tile is rather eye-catching, there’s always the threat that certain patterns will become dated. If you’re aiming for something a bit more enduring, your best bet is to go neutral with your tiling. For example, subway tiles on your floors and inside your shower are perfect for timelessness, and today they come in a variety of colors and styles. We recommend a neutral color like white for your floor, that way you can change your decor or even your wall color without having to re-tile your bathroom. And speaking of colors…

Colors: Whether it’s your walls, your sink, your bathtub, or your floors, it’s always a good idea to stick with bright, white colors for the bathroom. Bolder, trendier colors will go out of style much more quickly, just like the now-infamous salmon pinks and mint greens of the 80s. If you do want to mix it up and add some color, bring in some fun decor or accent pieces. And if you really, really want color on your walls, we recommend the classics like yellow, green, or blue, colors which exude freshness and sophistication without the looming expiration date.

Organization: Any functional bathroom needs sufficient counter space. Marble bathroom countertops are always classy and clean looking, as well as timeless – and they perfectly accent any surrounding white finishes. Quartz can also mimic the timeless feel of marble quite well in its own way, but marble has been the luxurious go-to for beautiful bathrooms for decades. As for tubs and sinks, it’s always good to go with freestanding items, which will not only provide a fabulous classical look, but also make them attention-grabbing additions to your overall layout.

Timeless Bedroom Design Ideas

Colors: Once again, neutral wins! The neutral color palette is sure to work with any piece of furniture to create an inviting and comfortable bedroom space. In short, the simpler the better: keeping things neutral will help you steer clear of passing trends while allowing the other items in your sleeping quarters (such as tables, lamps, and pillows) to do the popping!

Decorations: When it comes to bedroom decorations, the only real rule is that there are no rules! Decorations are so much fun to experiment with because they’re so easy to replace. This allows you to try out different colors and styles with no real damage done – just find a replacement if you don’t like a certain color or accent, and you’re ready to try again!

Beds: More than any other household item, you want your bed to be not only durable and chic, but also comfortable. A canopy bed is both practical and stylish, allowing for optimal warmth and privacy with closable curtains you can style any way you like. Meanwhile, platform beds are also sure to accommodate any bedroom.
